STUART GUY CONSULTING

OFFERING CONSULTANCY IN SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS IN PROCESS ENGINEERING AND ASSESSMENT OF CONTAMINATED LAND

Do you have problems with health and safety or environmental matters?  Does your process require risk assessment for employee or public safety or for environmental protection?  Do you have contamination problems that require remediation?  Then perhaps I can help.  I apply hazard - harm - pathway - target methods to risk assessments and produce reasoned arguments for the conclusions.  My reports are simple to understand as I believe that they should be written in a simple style.  The actions must be yours and therefore you must be part of the process.

I can also arrange training courses for your workforce in the safety and environmental procedures that affect your processing operation.

Quality, costs, safety and environment are intrinsically linked and improvements in safety, environmental and quality systems lead to reduced costs in most cases.  IPPC systems and environmental audits should lead to improved quality and reduced costs, especially as the cost of disposing of waste is increasing rapidly.  Let me audit your system and identify potential improvements to you environmental performance and your costs

Examples of Skills and Experience

Risk assessment of potentially contaminated sites

Investigate buildings for asbestos and other potentially contaminating materials

Complete chemical site investigations for developments of sites ranging in type from small repair garages to industrial sites

Environmental audits for a range of sites to identify areas of improvement

Assessment of risk of contaminants to the workforce, the public, the occupiers and the environment

Production of health & safety risk assessment for potentially very hazardous metal surface stripping process followed by improvements to the process to gain HSE approval for resumption of operations

Examination of system failures

Large brewery refrigeration system failure arising from incorrect chemical delivered and added to the system. This involved examining the equipment, analysing the secondary refrigerant solution and calculating the reduction in wall thickness from the amount of copper in solution.

Production of faulty floor panels where the problem was redefined in the first place to prevent further production and then cause of fault identified and rectified

Proved that silicon-based contamination had been introduced from supplier of processing cabinet into powder coating process

Expert witness

Contamination of materials used in production of electrical heating elements where the contamination was discovered in another process not involving the supplier

Major litigation case involving contaminated land and appearing in Court in London

Acted for defence in criminal case involving conspiracy to contaminate a brewing process where I assessed the probability of the prosecution allegation being achieved

Recycling of metals and chemicals

Worked in metals recycling field, especially in aluminium alloys and nickel alloys, as technical manager of a small firm producing aluminium ingot from scrap and producing specification nickel alloy scrap for custom smelting.  Experience of melting scrap and furnace technology

Dti funded research grant to modify waste acid in the galvanizing industry into a useful water treatment product

Training

I have lectured at the University of Birmingham for many years and organised many short courses for industry as well as presenting them.
